Chesterfield manager Paul Cook has demanded his side find consistency as they prepare for their FA Cup first-round tie against Yeovil Town. The Spireites, currently 10th in League Two with 19 points from 14 games, host the National League promotion contenders at the SMH Group Stadium this weekend.
Cook identified seven standout performances from this season as the benchmark his team must meet. "We have got to turn the positive vibe into a more consistent one," he said. The manager stressed the immediate challenge is to secure two wins for the supporters, starting with the cup tie and followed by a Jersey Mike’s Trophy match against Mansfield Town on Tuesday.
Recent form highlights challenge
Chesterfield's league form illustrates the inconsistency Cook wants to address. Their recent results include a 5-1 thrashing of Crewe Alexandra followed by a 4-1 defeat away at Newport County last weekend. That loss at Rodney Parade, where Cook was later charged with improper conduct by the FA, left the team 12 points adrift of the automatic promotion places. Their form over the last five matches reads one win, two draws and two losses.
Cook pointed to displays against York, Tranmere, Gillingham, Colchester, Crewe, Salford and Oldham as the standard. "If you can replicate them on a consistent basis then the reality is you will get where you want to be," he stated. "If you don’t then we won’t, that’s the brutal truth."
Respect for Yeovil threat
The manager warned his players to be fully alert to the threat posed by Billy Rowley's Yeovil side, who are keen to return to the EFL after seven years away. "We have to make sure we cause them more problems than they cause us," Cook explained. "We don’t want to come one of those numbers tomorrow - which there will be - of sides being knocked out by teams from a lower league." He added that Yeovil are very well coached with good patterns of play and will pose problems.
With defensive work a focus in training this week, Chesterfield will look to tighten up after conceding 21 goals in the league so far. Cook's immediate aim is clear: build momentum through cup success to fuel a climb up the standings.
