Lee Bonis scored the only goal as Chesterfield claimed their first League Two win of the season with a 1-0 victory at Salford City. The Spireites struck early and then defended resolutely to take all three points away from the Peninsula Stadium.
Bonis found the net after just two minutes. Josh Koroma capitalised on a defensive error and saw his shot saved, but the rebound fell perfectly for the Northern Ireland international to tap in from close range. That early breakthrough set the tone for a first half where Chesterfield looked the more dangerous side.
Koroma was a constant threat and fired another effort over the bar soon after. Bonis then almost doubled the lead before the break when he dispossessed Salford goalkeeper Will Norris 25 yards from goal, but his shot rolled just wide of the empty net.
Norris was called into action again early in the second period, making a smart diving save to deny a glancing Bonis header from a Koroma cross. Salford grew into the game as the hour mark passed, with Ben Woodburn hitting the base of the post for the hosts.
Paul Cook's side had to withstand late pressure as Salford made a flurry of substitutions. In added time, Ryan Stirk headed a cross onto his own post and Daniel Udoh fired wide, but Chesterfield held their nerve to see out the win. The result provides a vital boost after the opening day, moving the Spireites up the early standings.
"The lads showed great character," said manager Paul Cook. "To get an early goal away from home and then defend like we did is exactly what we needed."
The team now turns its attention to the next challenge, a home fixture against Bradford City next Saturday. Cook will hope to have a fully fit squad to choose from as they look to build momentum.
