Chesterfield FC has completed a major upgrade to the public address system at the SMH Group Stadium. The club commissioned audio specialists TG Baker to design and install a new network of JBL loudspeakers across all four stands, replacing the original system that had been in place since the stadium opened in 2010.
The project was initiated after the club received consistent feedback from supporters about the performance of the old PA. The new system is designed to handle emergency announcements, matchday entertainment, music, and paging, aiming to improve the overall atmosphere for the 10,600-capacity all-seater ground.
Technical details of the installation
TG Baker carried out a site survey before designing a system based on 26 JBL AWC159 all-weather loudspeakers. These IP56-rated cabinets were installed in a 100V configuration, with eight units in both the East and West stands and five in each of the North and South stands. This setup supports long cable runs and system monitoring, with the loudspeakers capable of operating from battery-backed PAVA amplification for safety.
A direct response to fan feedback
Club director Ashley Kirk confirmed the upgrade was a direct response to fan concerns. The previous PA system had been an issue for some time, with supporters repeatedly raising problems with clarity and reliability. The club views PA and music as a significant part of the match-day experience and wanted to create a better atmosphere in the build-up to and during games. Kirk stated the club is very happy with the outcome, noting the new system has made a huge improvement.
Barry Paterson, managing director at TG Baker, said his company did a great job with the installation, which was delivered on time. The firm has long experience with public address and voice alarm systems and has completed many similar stadium projects across the UK.
The upgrade arrives as the Spireites look to maintain their positive momentum in the league. According to the latest stats, the team's recent form has been strong, with their attacking play a particular highlight. This potent attack has helped them to 7th place in the standings with 15 points. Their next challenge is a tough away fixture, a trip to face Port Vale on 17 October, a side they drew 1-1 with at home last month. Fans hoping for a repeat or better result can check the upcoming fixtures for full details on all match timings.
